More info / Download DemoI hope this article helped you find the best news WordPress theme that suits your style.
I have always wondered why magazine style websites and themes are so popular. They are not easy to browser, it is hard to find information you are looking for, they are usually slow to load because of so many articles with images on front page and also because of so many social features that float with you while you browse such websites. This kind of website are not user friendly but then it hit my why they are so popular. The thing is that people are looking for content on these websites and the more time they spend on these websites the more money you can make from ads. It means that these themes and websites are made like this intentionality, so users can’t find what they are looking for but they know that it is there, so they keep browsing. This is just an idea and I have no data that could backup this but I wanted to express my opinion about this.
James,
Thank you for expressing your opinion!
Sometimes I really think that magazine style websites are made bad intentionally especially when you have no alternatives to get these news. This can be for local news, some sports team related news or some gaming or hobby related. Most likely it is not done intentionally and designers are trying to do their best and there should be some A/B testing done for this kind of website.
However, while most of the magazine style websites does look bad, I think that these themes are great and many news magazine website administrators could get some inspiration or take ready-made theme for their editionar website.
They are slow to load because developers didnt include web standards in correct way. Means 99% of developers does not know how to properly optimize the website.
Thank you for this awesome collection!
Which theme would your recommend as the best one for local news websites? Maybe there is one universal theme on this collection that I could use for different niche magazine and news websites?
Mike,
Thank you for your question!
My personal favorite theme is “Newspaper” which is also by far the most popular news theme on this collection and is used by thousands of websites. It is a versatile theme that you can use for any niche news magazine website as well as create some hobby magazine or create any other editorial website. Since this theme is used by so many users, it is also well tested and you won’t find any bugs in it and it is very important if you want to create professional looking magazine website. This theme is also SEO friendly, so your posts will be easier to find on Google. Newspaper is very fast loading theme which is also very important for SEO and good user experience in general.
Other themes on this collection are as good as “Newspaper” but they might not be as versatile if that’s what you are after. Otherwise you can choose any of these themes and you will be happy with results.
I would not agree Newspaper nor its own competitor Newsmag are good for SEO. Our sites have plunged through the rankings after we changed to these themes and we’re now searching for other solutions!
Stina,
Please let me know your website URL and I can do some review to see if theme is one to blame or there is something else. You can see some performance testing I did for another website using Newspaper theme. Website SEO is directly linked to its performance and that’s something most webmasters tend to ignore and blame themes, plugins and Google itself.
What would you suggest for a fully responsive template for real estate mag?
Myshka,
Mos themes fits your criteria. All themes listed above are fully responsive and will look stunning on mobile. All themes are highly customizable with at least few dozen color variations and loads of color pickers included to tweak color for elements separately. Most themes has several layout options to make it function exactly like you have imagined. Any theme you like will get the job done for real estate or any other niche as it entirely depends on your vision how it should look.
Let me know if you have some specific questions about these or any other themes listed on the Colorlib
Just looking at these various magazine themes and wondering ? the demo’s show various pages, so are the templates already setup with all pages just to bring in news feeds, or do you have to add pages yourself and install various plugins ? and what level of hosting package is required to host a magazine site like any of these ? any info would be much appreciated
Thanks
Jim
James,
Once you install any of above listed themes you will get a blank page with no content at all (in case you already have content on your website it will remain in place). Afterwards you can install demo data (dummy content) that will make your website to look exactly like on theme demo but this is completely optional. If you have a very little experience with WordPress you might want to use this data to get an idea how everything works.
Some themes comes with plugins includes and you will get notified that some plugins are required or are optional. You will see a message in WordPress dashboard and from there you will be guided through these extra steps.
Let me know if you have any other question.
While searching out magazine themes for our 3 sites, I bumped into this article a few times. After looking at the themes listed here… and ended up picking one of the themes….. Valenti or one of our sites, fMagaine for another and Voice Theme by Meks for our main site. Though each had it strong points and support has been excellent for each; i find all don’t put enough thought process into where ads should go other than in the header and right nav. Unfortunately I find most “magazine” themes focus to much on big images and not enough on ways for publishers to monetize their sites.
It would be nice if you would write and article that showcases some themes that understand that you need to create revenue if you want to run a magazine.
David,
I have already published theme collection which concentrates on blog and magazine style themes that are easy to monetize using AdSense.
However, any theme listed above can be used with AdSense. Of course most of theme doesn’t have read-made banner areas but you can use official Google AdSense plugin for WordPress which will help you to maximize AdSense revenue.
Let me know if you have any other question.
I love the magazine layouts but need to have a directory on my site as well. I’ve thought about plugins but not sure which is more stable. Generally the plugins don’t look as good as the theme from the two most popular that I have seen. Any advice on havng the best of both worlds.
Thanks!
Bobby,
There aren’t any magazines themes with directory functionality by default. You have to either choose magazine theme and combine it with some plugin or choose directory theme and design/code your own magazine layout.
None of directory plugins are optimized for some particular theme and they have generic design to make it work for as many themes as possible, so some work will be required to make it blend perfectly with your current theme.
Hi Aigars,
very interesting but troubling too!
I run a blog on Sahifa from Tielabs but was thinking of changing to get something different.
Don’t know which one to choose from.
What do you think of Sahifa? Is it worth it for me to change?
Thanks.
Omri,
Sahifa is the best selling magazine WordPress theme and it has been sold over 15,000 times since it was released back in 2012. However, developer does an incredible job and regularly releases new updates and bugfixes to keep up with latest design trends and WordPress development. If you like this theme then there is no need to change it. Make sure you install all the latest updates, so you are not missing out and you are good to go.
If you feel that Sahifa theme is not the right one for you you can always get a new one and it is a very simple process.
Let me know if you have any other question about these or any other themes that you can see on Colorlib.
Interesting that Sahifa is on ThemeForest for $58…..but is available on various websites for just $30…!
Makes you wonder what’s genuine and what’s not….
HJay,
Sahifa theme costs $58 and is sold exclusively on Themeforest. If you see it sold elsewhere it means that someone is trying to make money by scamming people. TieLabs sells their themes exclusively on Themeforest and if they would decide to sell their themes elsewhere they would lose half of revenue and I believe that they will do everything to avoid it. Buying Themeforest themes from other websites means that you are basically stealing from the original author. Also you won’t receive any support from author because you are not going to get a valid licence.
Noticia and Newspaper are my pick of themes.
Prashanth,
Thank you for your comment! It might be slightly confusing for you to switch from Genesis framework powered theme to regular theme. Genesis offers completely different user experience and you might need to have some extra effort to get used to it. Other than that Noticia and Newspaper themes are great themes for news and magazine style websites.
Hi Aigars,
I think you must have a look at my news magazine themes. 😀 Great collections. Thanks!
Toan,
For advertising opportunities on our website, please see this page. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
Magazon is one of my picks. Will definitely be trying for my tech blog. Thanks a lot for the collection! Great post!
Hitterman,
Thank you for your comment!
Magazon is around for a while now and have proven to be successful and have been used for many tech blogs and magazines. You can’t go wrong by choosing this theme for a tech blog. We also have theme collection dedicated to tech news sites and you can see it here. From above listed themes my favorite is Newspaper theme which is also the most popular WordPress news theme out there.
Let me know if you have any questions about magazine style themes and I will be happy to help.
Hey, I used these themes on my website which is a website about freelance writing and blogging.I would love to tell you that you must select themes which support Adsense. These themes can grab alot of visitors for you from social media.I would recommend you to install these responsive news themes on your website
Sohail,
Thank you for your feedback!
Actually you are not using any of above listed WordPress themes but instead you use Genesis Framework. It’s a great WordPress theme framework but it’s not listed on this theme collection. If you want to redesign your Genesis powered website you might want to check these Genesis Child Themes instead. If AdSense optimized themes is what you are after you might want to look here.
I really like the Master theme because of the combination of premium style with simplicity. But what I don’t like that is that the responsiveness works not good on my tablet in vertical position, and on my smartphone I get a totally different header (also different articles) that’s not OK, all versions should be in tune or it’s confusing for visitors or they don’t get the latest updates on top. But still I like the theme, are this just minor issues that could be solved, anyone?
Mcffee,
What tablet are you using?
I tried it iPad Air 2, Galaxy Note Tablet and iPad Mini 3 but didn’t notice any problems with the layout and articles. It is either some device related issue or your local issue with your web browser.
First of all, I am impressed Mr Aigars is constantly responding to almost all comments. Thanks. I have been looking for an alternative theme to make the landing page more involving and interesting. Also need to make other pages active. Have checked for last few weeks number of themes including Newspaper 6 (the one that you have mentioned), a few others from your selection, Newspaper by Mythemeshop and Newspaper by Gabfire, I almost decided on Newspaper by Gabfire but then I didn’t like their footer style and a couple of other things apparently missing. Still trying to work it out but not sure. Newspaper 6 is certainly the most versatile (I have quickly studied its documentation also to figure out pros and cons) but my fear is 1) It’s built on custom framework, 2) it’s too rich and may not load fast enough if the hosting server is not up to the mark. Your input will be appreciated as the developers may have their own interest in defending what they do. Thanks.
I don’t see my yesterday’s post here so am writing again a part of it. Newspaper 6 (mentioned in your list) is no doubt versatile but I have two main concerns.
1) Due to its feature rich nature it may respond slow while developing / editing a site
2) Its built on custom framework thus may not support all wordpress standard logins
3) It has got lots of images at least on the demo which distracts the reader from actual content.
Let me know what you think. I understand that all theme developers have their own reasons to include or exclude features and may be able to justify it. This is why I want to ask a neutral party, i.e. you, as that’s what I understand you are.
Correction:
2) It’s built on custom framework thus may not support all WordPress standard plugins.
Hi!
None of comments are removed but all are withheld for moderation therefore doesn’t appear right away.
Here are answers to your questions:
1. WordPress is slow on its own and it loads slow even when you are using a starter themes such as Underscores. WordPress is database heavy application and it takes all information from database and it takes a lot of time. However, you can speed things up by using cache. Caching plugins will make sure to cache content and serve it from disk without trying to connect to database each time. This will speed things up significantly.
It’s not an ideal solution because if your server is slow then even cached content won’t help much. It will load faster but never as fast as Colorlib or other well optimized WordPress websites. For that you need a good hosting which is built specially for WordPress. For more information about hosting you can read this guide.
2. Custom framework means that they have their own Theme Options panel, layout settings and other features. However, this has nothing to do with WordPress plugins. Theme doesn’t affect plugins and you can use whatever plugin you want. Some might not work but that’s the same with any other theme and those are very few unpopular plugins. That’s usually plugin’s fault and has nothing to do with theme.
3. Images are optional. You can not obligated to use them. I love images and I don’t like reading long text blocks but it’s about your personal preference. Theme will work perfectly fine without images. Of course it will look slightly different but that’s a minor thing.
Let me know if you have any other questions about WordPress themes, hosting or platform as a whole.
Well, you showed two of Tagdiv themes but not Newsmag. I am currently using that one. If they are so good, you should at least show them all from that author. Newsmag is just like Newspaper with a little less stuff. No fullwidth in Newsmag.
Mr Aigars
please i am about to build my own news website, and I’m considering newspaper 6 theme. But i dont want to use Google ads to generate revenue, rather i want to sell advert spaces directly. There are some companies that want to advertise on my website. So therefore i need a theme that will contains not less than 21 ads spot. can newspaper 6 capable of that? or Can you recommend any theme that can have not less than 21 ads spot for me? please am desperately waiting for your respond
Benjamin,
None of the above listed themes have 21 dedicated place for ads. However, you can use all custom ads widgets multiple times. That way you can have even more areas for ads even for Newspaper 6 theme.
AdSense is mentioned for all themes because it is by far the most popular option but you can use any banners without any restrictions. AdSense is not much different from other ad networks and regular banners.
I probably missed it, because my memory is abit off, but your talking only about the premium versions of these, correct?
James,
All above listed themes are premium ones. If you are looking for free magazine and news style WordPress themes you might want to check this theme collection instead.
Mr Aigars,
I was about to build my own magazine blog and I was looking for the Themes Like Profitmag. This is a fair and neat theme. So if you have any themes like Profitmag Then please let me know.
Thank you!!
Hi,
Thanks, good job. And I ask if it’s allowed to make change in code? like for example convert to arabic theme.
thanks again,
Mohamed,
Yes, you can do that as you receive all necessary files and rights to make any changes to code. Most themes are also translation ready and some are even RTL language ready.
Hey Aigars!
Great article!. But you have confused me even more. We are 4 people ,building a website for covering news on various businesses. We want seperate author login pages and a theme which is not-too-clutterd . Please can you help suggest one. We have been searching for over a month now!
Thanks.
Dev,
You have just wasted a whole month for nothing. You can use any theme and set different user levels that way each user will have a different dashboard. If you want to create a separate database table for each you can create a WordPress Multisite and again for that you can use any theme. None of your above mentioned things are related to themes but WordPress core functionality. Everything is there and you just have to configure everything.
Hello, i am planning to buy newspaper theme but have some questions before buying
1. The cost says $59, is it yearly or for lifelong?
2. will there be any charges for the updates if i buy $59 one?
3. does it have THEME OPTIONS?
4. what is the size of JAVASCRIPT
5. How responsive it is, i mean do i need any other plugin along with this theme to make it mobile friendly
i appreciate your fast reply on this
1. Updates are lifelong but support is not. You get 6 months of updates or you can purchase extended support package. But I think that support is the most needed at the very beginning when you are working on your website. From there you can keep your website update and you are good to go.
2. Once payment is done you won’t be charged repeatedly. It is a single purchase.
3. Yes, theme options are included and you can customize your website in any way you want. Chance color scheme, layout, functionality and do many other things.
4. It depends on your website configuration. Theme itself is not heavy but most users install dozens of plugins that they have no idea what those plugins does and then complain about slow loading speed. Also make sure to invest in a good WordPress optimized hosting such as SiteGround.
5. It is optimized for all mobile devices out there. It is mobile friendly and fully responsive and you don’t need to install any plugins. Like I said, ty to keep number of your plugins installed to a bare minimum. Less is always better.
I think Marroco theme deserves a place over here.
Tanuj,
There are hundreds of themes released each day and we can’t list all of them here. Your mentioned theme won’t be listed because it is around for some time already and haven’t got many positive votes with sales and comments. On this list we try to list only the best themes or themes that are well received by clients but this theme doesn’t fall in any of those categories.
Hi,
What is the difference between News Paper and News Mag. Which will better fit for an online cultural magazine?
Newspaper and Newsmag are themes are developed and designed by the same team. Both themes has similar functionality and the same core on which they are based. Only difference is from design perspective. You can feel free to choose the right theme for yourself from design perspective as both will get the same job done but will look slightly different.
I want to buy the Flex Mag theme. Thank you for this recommendation.
Does that theme have a login portal built in for user generated content?
Mark,
You can enable user registration and allow them to submit content via Settings >> General >> “Anyone can register”. This will work with any WordPress theme listed on this theme collection. It is a default WordPress feature but not everyone is aware of it.
Can someone recommend me good plugin for showing new news/posts, something like Sahifa and Newspaper themes have on the top of the home page on demos?
Aleksandra,
Those are custom built solutions and I would recommend to just get the theme itself as plugins are not going to magically add section like that inside your website header. Even if you will find plugin like that it will look out of the context of your website because plugins adds functionality and uses its own design and it is more than likely that plugin design won’t match with your website.
I am still looking for a better theme (if any) which is clean, simple to present my health and wellness contents. Got any idea?
Kobby,
Above listed are magazine style themes that are not going to be well suited for healthy and wellness websites unless you are going to cover news or some other editorial content. If you are looking for some dedicated medical themes you might want to check this theme collection. For wellness websites you might want to see these themes. If editorial content is what you are after then I would recommend Newspaper theme as it is the most popular one on this list and also is very flexible to be used in any niche including health and wellness related magazines.
I am planning to launch a new site, and both Newspaper and The Voux looks awesome. For magazine style themes, I suppose the hardest part is when a new site is up, there is not much content to make the layout scream when people come visit.
Anyway, while I prefer Newspaper overall, the style of the post title fonts on The Voux looks so beautiful! How is this done in The Voux and can this be done on Newspaper?
Also, I understand that both these themes should be fast in terms of loading times. May I take this opportunity to ask, if you are putting up a new WordPress sites, which plugins will you be using as the barest minimum for nearly or all site you build?
The Voux theme needs less content to make it appear like on theme demo. Newspaper will need much more content to get started. Newspaper theme will suite better for content rich website with loads of articles.
You can start your website with absolutely no plugins installed at all. Personally I use only plugin for contact form, social sharing icons and SEO. These are crucial plugins for any website but any other plugins are optional and you can easily live without them. If you are planning to use many plugins I would strongly recommend to invest in a good WordPress hosting such as one by SiteGround or WP Engine. With other shared hosting providers your website will be slow even when you won’t have any plugins installed. My mentioned hosting providers are one of few that are really optimized for WordPress.
Well, modern themes are too much image-oriented. Old good news stuff is mostly made by text.
Aigars,
Great selections and my question is
I want to create a world soccer news aggregator site from constant flow of news coming in from different sources as well as modern site with visually appealing for soccer photos and uploading youtube vids.
2. Ad spacing do i simply purchase a wwll known plugin to create ad spacing?
Thank you
Marc,
You don’t need a plugin for ads unless you want some extra control and tracking. You can simple add you AdSense or other banner code inside WordPress Text Widget that is included in WordPress by default. No need to install extra plugins for a simple thing like ads unless some extra tracking is what you are after.
Thanks for the detailed and rapid fire response.ill look into this
Hi Aigars, congratulations for your post, it helps a a lot. Currently I’m using Throne Theme by Meks on my site (tech news), but I’m decided to change to a magazine theme. I’m considering Voice (from the same author, because I like the design), Newspaper, and Presso. This last one, it has a functionality that I really like, which is the posts starts to appear as soon as I scroll down. At the same time, I think for SEO, Newspaper is the best. What do you think? Should I sacrifice design/functionality for SEO? Thank you very much.
Eduardo,
All your mentioned themes are equally SEO friendly. All these themes depends on WordPress default SEO and plugins such as Yoast SEO and All in One SEO. Which mens that you can choose andy theme you like from design and functionality perspective. Actually Newspaper now has Infinite scroll function for its category pages as well. And it isn’t too difficult to implement it for other themes as well as there is plugins such as Jetpack that offers Infinite Scroll which works for most themes out there.
You have shared the nice list of some best news theme . But I am confused which one to choose because my blog have different section . One Cover news And another is just like a eCommerce portal . Also I want a theme that support fixed navigation and must be responsive for better viewing experience over all scree size.
Shiwam,
You should choose some multipurpose theme. That way you will be able to create different sections such as magazine, service section, ecommerce section and much more. And of course fixed navigation will be in place as well. The best multipurpose themes you will find on this list.
I am still confused what tho choose . Have a look at my blog shiwam.in . This is a tech blog with eCommerce option also . Now tell me which theme will ‘suites me the best
These are dreadful suggestions if you wanted to have content + a store. Yuck.
Bea,
Multipurpose theme will allow to have content + store that’s why I made this suggestions. Some news/magazine themes also supports WooCommerce but they aren’t going to be as flexible as dedicated multipurpose themes.
If you have narrowed down to your favorite magazine theme from this list, please let me know those and I will check if they works with WooCommerce.
Please help me out!
i want to create a website about insurance and I’m considering newspaper theme, do you think newspaper theme is okay for insurance blog? Or do you have any suggestion for me?
please am waiting for your response.
Temitope,
Newspaper theme would perfectly fine for a blog style website as well. Haven’t seen anyone using it for insurance blog just yet but probably I just haven’t noticed. For more affiliate marketing optimized themes you might want to check this theme collection as well.
Hey thanks for taking your time to answer people as best as you can. I want to start a News website though it’s also going to have entertainment, Fashion etc… I have settled for “MH Newsdesk” for the simple fact that space for ads are place properly and it seems you can have five Banner/ads on one page. I am very interested in having a huge traffic as the site will be Monetized… But my first option is still “NewsPaper” cos of everything written about it, the only negative thing I see is the placement of adds which seems to be about 3 on one page and its not placed properly.. so I am still a bit confused. Please could you educate me more? Does “MH Newsdesk” also has mobile friendly ads. Does It uses the best clean SEO practices, Is it’s fast and easy to use. just like “NewsPaper”…. As much as I want to put out a very good News site, I am also very concerned about the Business side and how I can make money with it, so please advice me which of these two to settle for. Thanks
Lenny,
I would strongly recommend to go with NewsPaper theme because it is a much better supported theme than MH Newsdesk. We are actually planing to remove this theme because of several negative reviews and lack of regular updates. NewsPaper on the other hands is well maintained and it is going to be a much better long term investment.
AdSense works for both themes the same way. For better flexibility I would use Google’s own WordPress plugin for AdSense which you can find here. That way you will get more control over where and how you want to display your ads. Themes usually doesn’t do much optimization for AdSense because best AdSense placement usually means bad usability but themes are all about better user experience and not revenue.
Hi Lenny,
thanks, I’m very happy that you like the theme. Actually I can ensure you that our theme is well supported and we’re always more than happy to answer theme related questions in case you need support. The theme also is regularly updated to ensure compatibility with the lastest version of WordPress and the last update was in December.
Of course a theme like “Newspaper” which has bundled several 3rd party plugins is updated much more often in comparison to a theme which makes use of default WordPress functionality, simply because of the fact that there is a much higher risk of compatibility issues and also the included plugins need to be updated to the latest versions on a regular basis.
@Aigars: Not sure where you have read these “several negative reviews” as we are not aware of such reviews and we’re getting great customer feedback regarding the theme. But in case you are getting contacted by a user who needs assistance with his theme, feel free to forward the user to us and we’ll be more than happy to assist.
Michael,
Thank you for keeping an eye on Colorlib! Will make sure to forward all complains about MH themes directly to you. Many users gets confuses and think that Colorlib develops all these themes and we get a lot of feedback, comments and theme support requests.
Thanks, that’s much appreciated. We’re aware of this as we’re also running a themes directory with collections and we’re getting lots of support requests about 3rd party themes as well and then we need to point these users to the developers of the particular themes. I think this happens in cases where people don’t read the confirmation email with instructions after the purchase as that’s where links to theme documentation etc. is provided and probably then they don’t know how to get started and sometimes contact the site where they have seen the theme initially or the first site they can find where the theme is listed.
So in case you get any support requests regarding theme support in the future, please forward them directly to us and we’ll be more than happy to assist. If you get any requests about the free theme, then you can also send these users to the theme support forum on WordPress.org as we answer requests there as well in a very timely manner: https://wordpress.org/support/theme/mh-newsdesk-lite
Hi, thank you for this interesting article! I´m from Germany and saw this one theme. Which is it? Is it also for free or must I buy it?
Thanks and best wishes 🙂
Sandra,
Your mentioned website uses TwentyFifteen which is default WordPress theme and it is completely free to use.
Would like your opinions – i need a news style magazine – going after the 20-40 yrs U.S. market. -conservative political views as well as religious and secular looking to be educated. college to your professionals, young families. we dont know anything about coding and are limited in budget.
would be great to have a plug in allowing for drag and drop page design.
need a theme that can blog current events, need adv revenue and social media – once following is built will pitch to investors.
any suggestions.
David,
Very few magazine WordPress themes comes with Visual Composer or other page builder due to specific of these website. However, there are some themes that comes with Visual Composer and my top recommendation is Newspaper. You cared more about this theme here.
I am liking Newspaper as a theme, but it seems to lack a calendar (so I can keep readers apprised of upcoming events) and a directory (so I can list important companies in the business area I’m going to cover). I’m a total newbie, so could you please help me understand (1) whether Newspaper comes with either of those features, (2) if not, whether they are available and could be adapted to fit with the appearance of Newspaper, and (3) if Newspapers lacks them, is there another news theme you’d recommend. Many thanks!
Dan,
There are loads of calendar plugins and also event plugins with calendar functionality and most of these plugins are free. You can find them on the official WordPress plugin repository at WordPress.org.
Also plugins for directories are available and they are compatible with Newspaper and any other free and premium WordPress theme.
Both of your mentioned things are otherwise not available for any magazine theme out there but that’s where plugins comes into the game.
Hi, Aigars! Thanks for featuring BUCKET in your article. Happy to know you like this WP theme as well. 🙂
Cheers! (Oana)
Oana,
Thank for your making great themes! However, make sure to updated your themes at least once every 6 months as otherwise they will be removed from the list. Yours haven’t been updated for even longer period of time therefore are under risk. We try to provide the best suggestions for our users and outdated themes are our big concern.

Hi Aigars,
This is a wonderful list of magazine WordPress themes. I really like 15ZINE and Hottopix. Braxton is another good them, while the level of customization Sahifa provides is awesome.
Thanks a Ton!
Dear Mr. Aigars,
I am interested in newspaper theme. Is it possible to customise its functionality and design after I purchase it? I am looking for something similar to Huffingtonpost.com. I mean a theme that can work as a content aggregator as well as personlized content. There are also some features about its design that I would like to change it because I would like to differentiate from the main stream user (Make it somehow personalised or unique design).
regards,
Javid,
Newspaper has 12 grid style layouts and 25 different content blocks that you can use to configure your homepage and archive pages. This is much more than any other theme ever released. If Newspaper won’t be flexible enough for you then nothing ever created will be.
I was considering bringing a small change to make it a little unique. Because there are thousands of people using the same theme for different purposes.
Javid,
You can customize it as much that no one will ever tell what theme you are using. That’s great about Newspaper and other multipurpose WordPress themes.
One piece of feedback on the “flex mag” them. I have started to use flex-mag and first was all happy and impressed. But a little later I discovered that the author apparently has not updated the theme to the latest WP standards. It is difficult to see as there is no changelog for the theme.
My issues are e.g. a) the author does not define the text-domain in the proper way so that you can move the language files (mo/po) to the update-safe folder in wp-content/languages. b) there is no support for a child-theme. c) you can not use ad-management plugins (e.g. ad-rotate) as there is no support for shortcodes in the ads-fields.
Also it is worth mentioning that while you have a great set of predefined layouts for post, you have NO possibilities for layout changes in pages. Finally the support is very limited. There is NO support board where you can research past issues, and the answers from the author are either ‘RTFM-pls read the documentation’ or ‘sorry-this is not possible’. The documentation is a long one-pager but all in all contains just the bare minimum of what is needed.
In a nutshell I recommend that this theme is very good good for anyone who can use this in english just as it is comes. But once you want to make changes you are left alone.
Frank,
Thank you for your feedback about Flex Mag and sorry that you had to learn all this on your own.
I believe that many users will find your feedback very useful when making decision.
Thanks for sharing this comprehensive list of wp themes for bloggers and news sites!
I have been looking for a theme for quite some time and your list is the best list so far. I have further decided to go with the newspaper theme. It is awesome!
Thanks for your review. I have been looking for a comprehensive analysis on the best Magazine/New/Blog wordpress theme and I finally got yours.
I have been caught between Sahifa, Newspeak and now Newspaper on which to buy. But I think I have found my choice. Newspaper catches it for me, and I hope it meets my expectation. Once again. Thanks for your review its the best so far I have found.
Hi James,
I’m the editor of a popular Liverpool-related news and opinion website and I’m looking for a theme with a front page slider and a general aesthetically pleasing design.
What would you suggest to optimize the allure of having so many pictures on the site?
Mike
Michael,
I would recommend to go with “Newspaper” theme. Check all their demos to see how versatile this theme is. It even comes with a visual drag & drop page builder to make website creation even easier.
Thanks for your post. I have been searching for a comprehensive analysis on the most effective Magazine/New/Blog WordPress theme and that I finally got yours.
I have been caught between Sahifa, manufacture and currently Newspaper on that to shop for. however, I believe I have found my alternative. Newspaper catches it for me, and that I hope it meets my expectation. Once again. Thanks for your review its the most effective thus far I have found.
how to convert Ubergrid theme to html and css only?? any software or advice?
thanks
Ali,
There aren’t any software for that. You can just download html page using your browser and then do cleanup for markup that is left from JavaScript and PHP output. Going to be tricky but there aren’t any automation tools for that as WordPress is based on PHP and there is no export functionality for that.
How the performance of loading speed of theme above?
I am finding the paid theme that make my site load more faster.
Eva,
We have a dedicated post series on WordPress and its performance that should answer your questions regarding WordPress and premium theme performance. You can read more information here.
Thank you for such a thorough review of magazine theme sites. I found this very helpful. Which theme would you recommend for a magazine for demographic of 15-30 years of age? I am thinking Voice or ClickMag but would like your opinion.
Voice would be my recommendation as well. ClickMag does the same thing but design for the Voice is far more superior.
The first thing would be to read theme documentation that is included with each theme. It will likely answer all your questions but if that isn’t sufficient you can always get in touch with theme developers.
Thank you for these news theme posts, my question is, I would like to add a calendar/plugin to beginning of the front page, and have an authors page much like the momizat multinews authors page, but I would like something much cleaner, that loads fast, and has a bit of a Jannah or Wordplus, etc feel, and plays nice with modifications which i don’t get the feeling that multinews does. Any suggestions? Also I’m a novice to intermediate level designer, and don’t have much experience with things like optimization. thanks again!
Hello Aigars,
I’m excited that you started coding recently and now you’re doing well.
I want to create a news/magazine website, (maybe with Woocomerce integration), and these collections are great.
However, I want to do it myself and WordPress was recommended.
With my limited knowledge of coding, how can I make this happen?
Are these templates here free?
Victor,
Most of above listed themes does support WooCommerce. Meaning you just need to install any of these themes and WooCommerce and you are good to go. There is no need for coding whatsoever, not even basics.
Great article. Newspaper is a good looking theme and i am thinking to buy it.
Thank you for your feedback! I agree with you. It user to be a great theme for just publishing but now it is a fully functional multipurpose theme for any sort of website.
This is an awesome list, but I didn’t see anything close to the vision I have for my site. I’m looking for a site for easy curation and categorization, but is very simple to see and easy to update.
Demo sites shows what these themes are capable of and you don’t need to use 99% of the features if they don’t fit your vision. Just start from a blank page with any of the themes and just enable features that you need.
I would really go for the GoodLife theme;
I’m gonna take on the look on that, it looks sleek and amazing simple;
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing list;
Regards
Hello, friends I am looking free or premium theme for my banking news blog, if anyone can share link with me I will give him $10 in PayPal, I will be very thankful to you for this favor.
This is going to be the best fit for finance related website.
Hi, Aigars, great post. Greetings from Mexico. I wanted to ask if you could see this website (gatopardo), and with your expertise may be help me to know which template are they using.
They use a very modified version of Traversia theme. A lot of things are custom designed and modified, so it is going to be fairly difficult to match the style.
News9Paper theme is best ever, but I think penNews magazine is best theme with beautiful wide slider, theme i am using on my site i have shared a link of download as i have purchased theme. Above said theme list is awesome and i would like to say thanks to the writer of this post i have found a theme in the list for my new website.
Hello,
I´m looking for a Magazine Theme too. Usually I do it by myself – Layout, Programming and so on. But for this Client – there is no Budget. So I scrolled thru your list. First of all – thanks for this work. I´m sure this took a lot of time.
But, this takes a lot of time to read and to compare too. It is much easier to go directly to themeforest – order them by downloads and look at the Stars and Comments if it fits. Your pasted Descriptions are quite old. I used the OnFleek Theme. They stopped developing on it (still selling). Not compatible with WP 5.x – a lot of Functions are not working anymore. Just an example… because I know the theme.
Don´t get me wrong, I don´t criticize your work here. But with this Theme in your list I lost the faith that this article will help finding a theme which will work for the client. This is too risky.
So I realised, that I did not look at the Demos if they would work for me, instead I was looking if they still work and are maintained. This is what I meant before. Going directly to Themeforest.
Greetings
Mikkel
Hello!
I really like Newspaper theme but I wondering if it has a featured slider (automatic scrolling) or there is an easy way to add it?
thanks in advance.
Newspaper theme comes with Revolution Slider built it and that’s the most customizable slider currently available on the market. Automatic scrolling slider won’t be an issue at all.
I really like Onfleek and Gillion themes. Buzzy looks great too.
Thank you for sharing this amazing list. Keep on your good work.
Regards
My congratulations, an excellent article and a wonderful selection of themes.
I want to develop a digital newspaper in a community where there are two official languages. Which of the themes would make it easier for me to show the contents in those two languages?
Thank you.
All of them are compatible with WPML, which is the most popular multilingual plugin for WordPress. Choose the one theme you like the most and then combine it with WPML. More info on WPML can be found here.
Aigars-
We’re currently using Newspaper and things were going well. However, with their last update our speeds are lagging significantly and performance score dropped to 14. It seems the templates are loading a lot of unused code and contributing to the slowdown which started with the recent update.
Any suggestions-would switching to a different theme help? Thank you
Kristin,
In short, switching to a new theme is not going to improve the performance of your website.
The main reason for the low score is that you have ads on your website. Yes, those are AdSense ads by Google and Google recommends using them but at the same time they slow down your website significantly. It loads a ton of JavaScript and they are dynamic, so they take forever to load. If you want to continue to run ads then you just need to forget about a very high-performance score. Those two things don’t go side by side.
Btw, why are you using WP Super Cache and WP Rocket at the same time? Those plugins essentially do exactly the same thing and running them side by side is not recommended. Having two exact same plugins are not going to make your website any faster but just the opposite.
Hi, I was wondering how divi come to the list. They even don’t have a Newspaper layout in their library. I bought a license and it is never used after I tried once. By the way, I had searched out ThemeForest and web for getting a clean theme for writing my own blog. Finally, I was satisfied with fox theme. One of the versatile and powerful themes without a builder. But you can use builder too. Their backend landing page builder is awesome.
Such great collection of themes.. Love the way you respond to each and every one the comments.. Gone through all the themes here and I’m thinking Jannah will suit to my needs.. But, before purchasing, I want to know if there are con’s that I should know about the theme.. Or, are there any limitations of the theme that I should know before purchasing??
Regan,
Thank you for your feedback! I highly appreciate it.
Jannah theme is a great choice. It has everything to build a successful news/magazine-style website. Like all premium themes, it comes with loads of features that not everyone needs. Make sure to disable everything you don’t need, so it wouldn’t slow down your website. Additionally, I would recommend installing caching plugin such as WP Rocket or any other that will speed up your website greatly.
Other than that Jannah is great for any website thanks to its flexibility.
