Squarespace market share

Squarespace’s market share varies depending on what source you look at:

  • According to BuiltWith, Squarespace has a 13% share of the hosted website platforms market. In other words, 13% of all websites using hosted solutions use Squarespace.

This makes it the fourth most popular fully-hosted website platform after Wix (35%), Shopify (17%), and Wix Stores (15%). Note that WordPress—one of Squarespace’s biggest competitors—isn’t included in this as it’s a self-hosted solution.

  • According to Datanyze, Squarespace has a 14.93% share of the ecommerce platforms market.

This makes it the third most popular ecommerce solution after WooCommerce (37.73%) and Woo Themes (15.01%).

  • According to Statista, Squarespace has a 14.49% share of the ecommerce software market.

Squarespace financial statistics

Next, let’s take a look at some Squarespace statistics that relate to the finance side of things. We’ll look at the platform’s annual revenues, profit and loss, and GMV.

Squarespace revenue

Squarespace earned around $784 million (USD) in revenue in 2021, according to its annual SEC filing. This was over $160 million more than the total revenues earned in 2020.

While $784 million is no small amount, it’s substantially less than Shopify earned in the same year—one of Squarespace’s biggest competitors. As we mentioned in our roundup of Shopify statistics, Shopify earned gross revenues of over 4.6 billion in 2021—which is 4x more than Squarespace.

Revenue by year:

  • 2022 – $867.0M
  • 2021 – $784.0M
  • 2020 – $621.1M
  • 2019 – $484.7M
  • 2018 – $389.9M

Squarespace revenue by source

Squarespace earns the vast majority of its annual earnings through selling subscriptions. Of these revenues, around 70% come from annual subscriptions and 30% from monthly subscriptions.

Other revenue sources include commerce transaction fees and payment revenue-sharing arrangements.

YearSubscription revenueOther revenue
202192.1%7.9%
202094.3%5.7%

What’s interesting about this is that again, it’s notably different from Squarespace competitor Shopify, which earns less than a third of its revenue from subscription sales.

Squarespace revenue by product type

Squarespace subcategorizes its revenues into two groups, each representing one of its main service offerings: Presence and Commerce.

Presence refers to revenues derived from Squarespace’s core platform subscriptions like its Personal and Business plans.  Commerce refers to revenues from its commerce-focused subscription plans, as well as other commerce revenues such as transaction fees.

Here’s a breakdown of Squarespace revenue for each product type:

YearPresence revenue ($)Presence revenue (% of total)Commerce revenue ($)Commerce revenue (% of total)
2022597.368.89%269.7 million31.11%
2021554.5 million70.7%229.5 million29.3%
2020477.8 million76.9%143.3 million23.1%
2019404.2 million83.4%80.6 million16.6%
Squarespace revenue over the years

As you can see, the percentage of total revenue that comes from Commerce has grown over the last 3 years, while the percentage of total revenue that comes from Presence has fallen.

This reflects a change in the platform’s focus. In recent years, Squarespace has shifted its focus from being a general-purpose website builder to an ecommerce solution and rolled out new features to tap into this market. As a result, its commerce revenues have increased.

Squarespace revenue by region

Over two-thirds of Squarespace’s revenue comes from customers in the US:

YearUS revenue ($)US revenue (% of total)International revenue ($)International revenue (% of total)
2021544.5 million69.4%239.5 millon30.6%
2020430.1 million69.2%191 million30.8%
2019343.1 million70.8%141.7 million29.2%

Squarespace ARPUs (average revenue per user)

ARPU (average revenue per user) is another important metric. It tells us how much Squarespace earns, on average, for each of its subscribers. The stats show that ARPUs have increased over the last few years.

ARPUs by year:

  • 2022 – $209
  • 2021 – $202.5
  • 2020 – $186
  • 2019 – $181
  • 2018 – $178

Squarespace profit and loss

Despite the fact that Squarespace’s revenues grew from 2020 to 2021, its net profit decreased. In 2020, Squarespace made $30.6 million in profit. But in 2021, they made a net loss of $249.1 million.

The reason for this loss in 2021 is that the platform’s operating expenses also grew – by a lot. This increase in expenditure outweighed the revenue growth.

Squarespace GMV

Squarespace reported a GMV of around 5.78 billion in 2021. GMV (gross merchandise volume) represents the total dollar value of orders processed through the Squarespace platform.

Squarespace GMV by year:

  • 2022 – $6.05B
  • 2021 – $5.78B
  • 2020 – $3.9B
  • 2019 – $2B
